Taylor's writing is a revelation, masterfully blending an intricate fantasy world into our own, with an artist's flair for exquisite details. "Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a lush, sweeping, romantic marvel of a book. A cracker story and a truly entertaining read." "Yes, it is fantasy romance, complete with angels and devils, but Taylor's prose is fresh and sassy enough to blow away any ennui with the genre. ![]() Taylor manages her self-imposed challenge with aplomb." "It's to Taylor's great credit that evil incarnate and its love match in Daughter of Smoke and Bone are such imaginative interpretations and that the worlds in which this romance unfolds are likewise so unique: Telling a tale this apocryphal requires serious outside-the-box plot work to pull off. ![]() the world-building descriptions and language stop your heart and then, like a defibrillator, start it up again." "A breath-catching romantic fantasy about destiny, hope and the search for one's true self that doesn't let readers down. (Seriously, cancel all plans once you begin you won't want to put it down.). "This smartly plotted, surprising, and fiercely compelling read will hook you from its opening pages. ![]()

![]() ![]() ‘Why, I will,’ Ubu responds in one line among many that seem torn from the pages of the Trumpian present. ‘Who will administer justice now?’ Mère Ubu asks. This Super-Id – Jarry once described Ubu as ‘the ignoble otherself’ – not only kills the king but dispatches the Polish aristocracy, peasantry and judiciary too. ![]() Unlike Macbeth, Ubu needs no convincing, because he has no conscience: in Ubu cocu (‘cuckolded’), a sequel to the play, he even flushes a character named Conscience down the toilet. Immediately Mère Ubu, his wife, urges her ‘dirty old man’, who has somehow become aide-de-camp to King Wenceslas of Poland, to seize the crown. Père Ubu opens the play with a notorious ‘Merdre!’, the extra ‘r’ putting his stamp on a crappy world. ![]() Ubu roi is, essentially, a parody of Macbeth with allusions to Falstaff and Napoleon thrown in. With touches drawn from Rabelais, Guignol and Nietzsche, Jarry extended this adolescent attack on one teacher into a broad satire on all authority. ![]() Jarry based his play on an old skit called Les Polonais which he cooked up with fellow students at his lycée in Rennes to mock a hapless physics instructor called M. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Definitely worth a listen, especially if used for teaching or as an aid to study. But, since the emphasis did fall on the important parts of the line (to clarify the meaning of those words by making it obvious that they were meant to be significant), this performance could be a good introduction to Shakespeare for first (or second or third) time readers, who are not yet accustomed to Shakespeare's syntax, style, and vocabulary. This effect can be powerful when sprinkled in, but tended (in my opinion) to hamper the lines' ability to communicate. ![]() Iago's lines were often delivered in a really low tone and with a halting pace. The Tragedie of Othello, the Moore of Venice, from a facsimile copy of the First Folio (1623) ( transcription project) Othello, the Moor of Venice, from The Plays of William Shakespeare, in eight volumes, vol. There is no lack of emotional power in the lines of this play in themselves, but the actors seemed over-zealous to emphasize the emotional stress in their lines so that at times Othello, Cassio, Iago, Desdemona, Emilia, and Roderigo's lines came off as affected. The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare written around 1603. The Arkangel voice actors put out a lot of energy into their lines, but the cadence tender to be jarring at times. A good but rather histrionic introduction to experiencing Othello ![]() ![]() Their case was incredibly polarizing during the already politically paranoid Cold War era. ![]() The Rosenbergs are firmly enmeshed in the American historical memory and cultural imagination, especially after being put to death via the electric chair. The real Rosenbergs were nothing like the way Anya described them in The Vixen, the Patriot and the Fanatic, but perhaps the mythology around them has prevented us from knowing what they were actually like. ![]() In The Vixen, the Patriot and the Fanatic, Junius is relegated to the anti-Semitic trope of the weak, impotent Jewish man, while Esther’s loving relationship with her two children is all but dismissed. In real life, Rosenberg and her husband, Julius (dubbed Junius in Anya’s book), were convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and were executed in 1953. ![]() ![]() In The Vixen, Simon’s assignment just so happens to be to edit an erotic spy thriller about Ethel Rosenberg (named Esther Rosenstein in Anya’s book), a childhood friend of his mother who’s depicted as a traitorous, evil sexpot whose only aim is to destroy American men with her exotic wiles and heaving bosom.
